Writing a Résumé: Keep Your Audience in Mind

Friday April 11, 2014

When creating a résumé, there are many things that you need to keep in mind. Always remember to include all relevant education, experience, certifications and trainings that you have acquired. Make sure to proofread your final product or have someone proofread it for you. Grammatical errors can overpower your achievements. Moreover, keep your audience in mind.

Anytime you create a document, you need to think about your audience. What do they expect to see? What do they expect to learn? A résumé is no different. There are many types of résumés. A few examples are chronological, targeted and functional. All of which can express an individual's qualifications in a different way.

When applying for jobs in the public sector, make sure to evaluate your audience. Read up on what the agency is looking for and how much information they would like to see. Do they have strict requirements? What will happen if you do not adhere to their requirements? Decide on what your audience would like to see prior to creating your résumé to ensure that they can evaluate your qualifications properly.

What tips have you learned that help you in assessing your audience when creating a document, such as a résumé?

Creating a Résumé: Detail Your Work Experience

Friday April 11, 2014

When creating a résumé, it is essential to make a future employer aware of the experience and accomplishments you have gained and the knowledge, skills and abilities you have learned. One of the best ways to do this is through the work experience portion of your résumé.

Titles do not always give an accurate description of what a job entailed, nor does only stating the name of the employer. To give the reviewer of your résumé the best description possible, detail your experience. Include dates, employer names, position titles and, most importantly, duties performed and accomplished.

One way to test out if your résumé contains a good explanation of your experiences is to give your résumé to a family member, friend or colleague and have them proofread it for you. They can give you an opinion of what the reviewer may be seeing when they read your résumé.

Do you ever have someone close to you proofread your résumé before you send it out to potential employers?
